I really hope this isn't going to turn into mastitis. My left breast is red and inflamed, pain 6/10, warm to the touch and tender with palpation. Its been like this for at least several days, I finally remembered to really look at it yesterday which is when I saw the redness, on the under side. It probably just clogged milk ducts, but could develop into a full blown infection if I can't get it under control. I had been using warm compresses, and trying to massage the area, but it is so sore! Tylenol and Motrin do nothing for the pain.
I got mastitis when Kelly was 5 weeks old...it absolutely sucked, because I let it go, thinking it was clogged ducts (which is how it started probably) & I was hot because we spent the day at the beach and was sunburned, when in reality I had a serious infection. By the time I went to the acute care clinic, my fever was 103.4 (treated with motrin & tylenol), and my entire breast was red and hadn't had a letdown in nearly 24 hours...my supply on the one side took literally months to recover despite my best efforts. They gave me Keflex for the infection and Percocet for the pain. I felt better almost instantly and was able to continue nursing. Even with mastitis, one should continue to nurse on both sides. The confused, idiot, PA told me not to feed her on the infected side, when in reality that is totally false! Never stop on a side for any reason, even when it feels like fire coming out of your nipple and you want to cry out in pain, you gotta keep going, or risk the supply dropping off--that was my experience any ways.
That's my two cents.
